How will the guest at home know whether he has eaten or not? It was a way of understanding during the Ottoman period.
A glass of water and a cup of coffee were given to a guest at home. If the guest took the cup of coffee first, then the guest was considered to have eaten. On the other hand, if the guest had taken the glass of water first, it would have been assumed that the guest was hungry and would eat. The people of the house were then signaled to prepare food for the guest.
When the guest came to eat, fruits were given instead of preparing a heavy meal for him.
As the guest knew this custom, so did the host. As a result, there was no difficulty in such sophisticated symbolic communication.
