We often talk a lot about the piety of the Sahabah (ra). But one of the most important pillars of their lives was fitness 🏃♂️ which we often forget. They did not separate fitness from worship.
Now of course we don't have the detailed fitness routine of Hazrat Umar (ra) like how many push ups he did per set or what else he did.No But it is clear from various accounts that he was very, very, very serious about fitness. ✅
In his famous book Tabaqat al-Qurba, Ibn Sa'd described Hazrat Umar as possessing a muscular, strong physique. So we can assume that he was doing at least some capacity strength training - be it weight lifting (probably a weight shield or sword) ⚔️ or a body weight or two.Mixture - Whatever. Because we all know that a muscular body is not possible without strength training.
Umar (ra) was quite tall on him 📏. His head was often held high in a group of people. It must have taken years of heavy exercise for such a tall man to have such a muscular build - human physiology dictates that.
What was her cardio routine - we don't know thatexactly But this we do know that he used to walk a lot in and around Madinah - hours upon hours - miles upon miles 🚶♂️. Horse riding, swimming 🏊♂️
And archery 🏹,
Swordplay ⚔️ etc.
He was very serious about martial arts training. And most of all - he himself was a great warrior. So it can be assumed that he himself did these practices regularly.
That is, differentA variety of cardio and strength-endurance activities were a regular part of his routine.
Hazrat Umar (RA) was not only conscious of his own fitness - he had an equal eye on the fitness of the Muslim Ummah.
After becoming Caliph, he institutionalized fitness programs like horse racing, swimming, archery, etc. for the entire nation on a large scale throughout the Muslim empire. The hadith of the Holy Prophet (S) was all ready in this regard. And Umar (RA) officially took it to door-to-door fitness programs throughout the empire. He issued a general command - to every parent to take care of their children's physical strength and abilities.
Besides, Umar (RA) used to eat in moderation 🍽️. Overeating and obesity were frowned upon.
As the golden age of Islam disappeared, so did the Muslim fitness tradition, along with many other good things. It is our responsibility to bring it back. Start with yourself, start with your family, make fitness a culture 💪. As if the world knows us as a strong nation 🌍!
