I was sitting at home, ready to eat. As soon as the food was placed before me, I remembered the gift—I had rented three cars and spent a significant amount at this wedding. Naturally, I felt the need to make sure I got my money’s worth.
With that mindset, I filled my plate generously, ensuring I took everything I wanted. After eating, I noticed that I had left about 5% of the food on my plate. But I had no regrets—after all, I had paid for it!
As I walked away from the dining table feeling like a winner, I failed to see the bigger picture. The father who had worked tirelessly for years to arrange his daughter’s wedding, ensuring that no guest left hungry, was possibly sitting there counting his debts, worrying about the financial strain of the event.
While I laughed in satisfaction, somewhere in another part of the world, someone was crying from hunger. For every grain of food I wasted, there was a person who desperately needed it.
A Simple Reminder:
If you can afford to give a gift at a wedding, do so from the heart. If not, don’t feel pressured. But never justify food waste as a response to how much you spent.
Let’s be mindful. Take only what you need. Respect the effort behind every meal. Because while food may seem abundant to us, for many, it is a privilege.
Say no to food waste. Be grateful. Be responsible.
