The True Purpose of Knowledge,
In our pursuit of knowledge, our intention must always be pure—seeking it solely for the pleasure of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) warned us against acquiring knowledge for the wrong reasons, such as seeking fame, superiority over others, or worldly recognition.
Jabir (RA) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
> "Do not seek knowledge to boast before scholars, to argue with the ignorant, or to gain a position of prominence. Whoever does so will be in the Fire."
(Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith 1)
Similarly, Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
> "Whoever acquires knowledge with the intention of attaining worldly gains rather than seeking Allah’s pleasure will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Judgment."
(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 1; Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 1)
The First to Be Judged on the Day of Judgment
One of the most famous hadiths describes how three individuals will be judged first on the Day of Resurrection. Among them will be a person who learned and taught knowledge but for the wrong reasons.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
> "A scholar who acquired knowledge, taught others, and recited the Qur'an will be brought forward. Allah will remind him of His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Then Allah will ask, ‘What did you do with these blessings?’
> He will respond, ‘I acquired knowledge for Your sake, taught others, and recited the Qur'an.’
> Allah will say, ‘You lie! You gained knowledge so people would call you a scholar, and you recited the Qur'an so people would call you a Qari. And they did call you that in the world.’
> Then Allah will command that he be dragged on his face and thrown into the Fire."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1)
A Sincere Reminder
This hadith is a powerful warning to all of us. Knowledge is a great blessing, but it must be sought with the right intention—to please Allah alone. Let us purify our hearts and ask Allah for sincerity in our pursuit of knowledge.
May Allah grant us the ability to seek and share knowledge solely for His pleasure. Ameen.
