Dowry is a deeply rooted societal issue that has caused immense suffering, including domestic violence, emotional abuse, and even tragic deaths. However, Islam strictly forbids both giving and taking dowry, considering it a grave sin. Islam upholds the dignity and rights of women, making it clear that dowry is unjust and unacceptable.
Islamic Teachings on Dowry
1. Protecting Women's Rights
Islam elevates the status of women by granting them honor and dignity. Instead of dowry, Islam introduces Mahr (bridal gift)—a rightful obligation for the groom to the bride. Unlike dowry, Mahr is a symbol of love, respect, and security, not an unjust demand.
2. Dowry is a Form of Injustice
Taking dowry is equivalent to seizing another’s wealth unfairly, which Islam strictly prohibits. It leads to oppression and exploitation, contradicting the very essence of justice in Islamic teachings.
3. The Qur’an’s Warning Against Unjust Gains
Allah says in the Qur’an:
> “Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 188)
4. Prophetic Guidance
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized simplicity in marriage:
> “The best marriage is the one that is easiest and least costly.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1)
Punishment for Dowry in Islam
A Sin Recorded by Allah: Those who demand or give dowry will have their actions recorded as a sinful act.
Accountability on the Day of Judgment: They will face strict questioning in the Hereafter.
Legal Consequences: If dowry leads to harm, oppression, or violence, Islamic law prescribes justice for the victim.
The Path to a Dowry-Free Society
It is our collective duty to eradicate dowry and promote simple, honorable marriages. By following Islamic teachings, we can put an end to this harmful tradition and create a just society where women are valued and respected.
