7 Tips To Leverage The Power Of The Learning Zone!

Continuous learning isn't just a competitive advantage; it's absolutely necessary. 


The author William S. Burroughs famously wrote, “When you stop growing, you start dying.” For a business, growth metrics are bellwethers of success: revenue, profitability, market share, talent, innovation, customer satisfaction, and more. As such, executives are always on watch for how their company is growing.


Since growth is essential, cultivating a growth mindset should be a priority for senior leaders. Growth mindset, a concept popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck, suggests that abilities and intelligence can be learned through dedication and hard work, rather than being fixed, innate traits. 


A study from Harvard Business Review found that companies that exhibited a growth mindset created a more positive and productive work environment than those that exhibited a fixed mindset. Specifically, those in a growth mindset culture were:



47% likelier to say that their colleagues are trustworthy

34% likelier to feel a strong sense of ownership and commitment to the company

65% likelier to say that the company supports risk taking

49% likelier to say that the company fosters innovation

Growth mindset is vital to continuous learning. Deloitte research found that organizations with a strong learning culture are 92 percent more likely to develop novel products and processes, 52 percent more productive, 56 percent more likely to be the first to market with their products and services, and 17 percent more profitable than their peers. Their engagement and retention rates are also 30–50 percent higher.


Yet, for leaders to embrace learning with a growth mindset is easier said than done. Many leaders suffer from what author Eduardo Briceno calls The Performance Paradox. Briceno writes, “The performance paradox is the counterintuitive reality that if we focus only on performing, our performance suffers.


 Many of us have a vague, misguided sense that to improve we just have to work hard at getting things done. But in fact, that’s not the way to improve. There are two different kinds of hard work and they’re both essential.


To improve or innovate, we can’t spend all our time doing things as best as we know how, trying to minimize mistakes (I call this the Performance Zone).


 We have to also engage in the mental state and strategies to go beyond what we know (I call this the Learning Zone). When we do these together, we’re Learning While Doing.”


A leader who strives to sustain a healthy oscillation between the Performance Zone and the Learning Zone is Dr. Kyle Daigle, DC, FIBNFN-CND.

Look for opportunities to turn theory into practice. Practical application of what you learn reinforces your knowledge and hones your skills.

Regularly read research papers and articles in your field.


 Staying informed about the latest studies and findings helps you remain at the forefront of your industry.


Staying in great physical and mental shape is crucial for learning at higher levels. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and mental wellness practices like meditation and mindfulness enhance your ability to absorb and retain information.


In today’s world, continuous learning is not just a competitive advantage; it’s table stakes to stay in the game. Creating a culture that embraces the Learning Zone is essential to long-term success.


 As the leadership thinker Peter Drucker wrote, “We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.”
