How to Choose Durable Fashion? Expert Tips for Timeless Style!

As sustainability in fashion becomes a major concern, durability is taking center stage in the conversation. With fast-fashion retailers like Primark introducing a "Durability Framework," claiming to extend the life of their products, some experts are skeptical.

While it's essential to extend the lifespan of clothing (as this can reduce environmental footprints), critics like Patrick Duffy from Global Fashion Exchange view Primark's announcement as "greenwashing.

" He argues that genuine durability involves high-quality materials like organic cotton or recycled fibers, not the synthetic fabrics typical of fast fashion.

Orsola de Castro, co-founder of Fashion Revolution, adds that while Primark products may technically last due to their polyester content, this comes with a downside—polyester takes centuries to decompose.

To truly create long-lasting fashion, brands would need to overhaul their supply chains, moving away from rapid production and cheap labor.

For shoppers looking to invest in durable clothing, experts offer several practical tips.

Jeans:

Michael Pendlebury, founder of The Denim Doctor, recommends jeans made from Japanese selvedge denim, which is the most hard-wearing and long-lasting. While jeans with elastane break down within a year, selvedge denim from brands like Nudie or Edwin can last for years with proper care.

Jackets:

Rosanna Watson, founder of Snowdonia Gear Repair, advises focusing on the quality of zips when buying jackets. She recommends branded zips like YKK or Opti and avoiding lightweight materials if you want longevity. Shopping in-person allows you to test the fabric, zips, and seams to ensure durability before purchasing.

Vintage Finds:

Vintage clothing often boasts superior craftsmanship, as pieces were not mass-produced like today. Kim, co-founder of Vintage Sisters, suggests checking inside garments for signs of wear but reminds shoppers that most damage can be repaired by a tailor.

Eyewear and Footwear:

When choosing glasses, Jo Skelton of Peep Eyewear recommends acetate frames over plastic ones, as they tend to last longer. For boots, Jamie Whitehouse of The Boot Repair Company suggests looking for welted boots with leather uppers for added durability and repairability.

Tailoring and Fit:

Donna Tweedale, a personal stylist, highlights the importance of choosing pieces that can be altered. Sizing up can allow a seamstress to adjust garments over time, accommodating changes in your body shape and making the item more versatile.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can make fashion choices that are both stylish and built to last, ensuring your wardrobe is as sustainable as it is timeless.

The Man Who Invented The "Psychopath"?

The Man Who Invented the “Psychopath”? Hervey Cleckley, an influential psychiatrist, is often credited with shaping modern understandings of psychopathy, even though his original intent was to help rather than stigmatize those affected. His 1941 work, The Mask of Sanity, was pivotal, as it introduced the concept of the psychopath as a specific personality type with 16 distinct traits. Cleckley described individuals who seemed outwardly rational but exhibited shallow emotions, lacked empathy, and engaged in destructive behaviors, though often without malice. Cleckley’s perspective was initially sympathetic; he saw these individuals as “forgotten” by psychiatry—people who needed understanding and treatment. However, as psychopathy entered the public lexicon, the term was quickly associated with malice, violence, and even inhumanity. Cleckley’s nuanced portrait of the psychopath was adapted by later researchers like Robert Hare, who created the widely used Psychopathy Checklist, a t...
