Born into a Jewish family in Egypt, Eli Cohen later moved toward Israel after 1948, while maintaining strong involvement in Jewish and Zionist circles. His background, language skills, and deep understanding of Middle Eastern society eventually brought him to the attention of Israeli intelligence.
In 1960, he was recruited by Israeli military intelligence and later worked closely with the Mossad. His mission was unlike anything attempted before: infiltrate Syria at the highest level and gather strategic intelligence.

To enter Syria, Cohen was given a completely new identity. He became “Kamal Amin Thabet,” a wealthy Syrian businessman returning from Argentina after years abroad.
