🥩The Prophetic Way of Preserving Food: Natural Sunnah Methods Modern Science Still Appreciates

Long before refrigerators, artificial preservatives, and chemical additives existed, people preserved food in simple, natural, and healthy ways.


During the blessed time of Rasulullah ﷺ and the Salaf As-Salihin, food preservation was based on cleanliness, wisdom, sustainability, and natural ingredients created by Allah سبحانه وتعالى.


Today, as many people become concerned about chemicals in processed foods, these timeless Sunnah-inspired methods are once again gaining attention around the world.


🥩Preserving Meat with Salt & Sunlight (Qadid)


This was the most common method of meat preservation. The meat made in this process is called "qadid" (قديد) in Arabic would have been


• Method: The meat was thinly sliced, salted and dried in the hot sun. The salt would draw the water out of the meat and the heat of the sun would dry it completely. Since there is no water, microorganisms cannot grow there, so the meat stays good for a long time.


There is a famous incident about the preservation of sacrificial meat. At first, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam prohibited keeping the meat of Qurbani for more than three days, so that The poor and needy people who came to Madinah could get meat. Later when the scarcity was removed, he allowed it to be preserved.


On the authority of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, she said: The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:


كنتُ نَهَيتُكم عن لُحومِ الأضاحيِّ فَوقَ ثلاثٍ ، ليتَّسعَ ذو الطَّولِ علَى مَن لا طَولَ لَهُ ، فَكلوا ما بدا لَكم وأطعِموا وادَّخِروا


"I forbade you to keep the meat of the sacrifice for more than three days, so that all might have abundance of it. Now Allah has given abundance, so eat, store up and give in charity."

This method of "preserving" was basically drying the meat with salt and sun to make "Kadid". Sahaba Kiram used to take this kadeed or dried meat on his travels and cook it when needed.


🌴Drying Dates for Year-Round Storage


Dates were the staple food of the Arabs. They dried the dates and made them into "tamar" (تمر) to preserve them for the whole year.


• Method: Ripe dates were dried in the sun to remove the watery part. As a result, it does not decompose easily and the nutritional value remains intact.


Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used to store a year's worth of food (dry dates and barley) for his family.


كان يبيعُ نخلَ بني النضيرِ ، ويحبِسُ لأهْلِهِ قوتَ سنتِهم


It was narrated from Umar Radiyallahu Anhu that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used to sell dates obtained from the tribe of Banu Nazir and used to store a year's worth of food for his family.

This proves that preserving food in natural ways is not only permissible, but also included in the Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.


🍯Honey — Nature’s Powerful Preservative


Honey itself is an excellent preservative. No microorganisms can grow in it, so it remains intact for thousands of years.


Allah Ta'ala says, "From its (the bee's) stomach issues a drink of various colors, in which there is healing (shifa) for humans."(Surah An-Nahl, Verse: 69)


Honey is not only medicinal, but also helps preserve other foods. In ancient times fruits or other things were preserved by dipping them in honey.


🫒Vinegar (Sirka) — A Sunnah Food with Preserving Benefits


Vinegar is an acidic substance, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. Its use in preserving pickles or other foods is common since ancient times. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam preferred vinegar Praised as a curry.


أنَّ النَّبيَّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّم سَألَ أهلَه الأُدُمَ، فقالوا: ما عِندَنا إلَّا خَلٌّ، فدَعا به، فجَعَلَ يَأكُلُ به، ويقولُ: نِعمَ الأُدُمُ الخَلُّ، نِعمَ الأُدُمُ الخَلُّ


Narrated Jabir Radiyallahu Anhu: Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam asked his family for curry. They said, we have nothing but sirka (vinegar). He ordered it to be brought and began to eat it saying, "What a good curry vinegar is! What a good curry vinegar is!"

Since vinegar is such a prized food and its preservative power is undeniable, using it as a natural preservative is a good and healthy practice.


🌿Preserving Food with Oil


The oil forms a protective layer on the food, preventing it from coming in contact with air. As a result, oxidation and growth of microorganisms are prevented. Olive oil was one of them. Various things like cheese,Herbs etc. were preserved by dipping them in oil.


From the above discussion it is clear that the concept of food preservation exists in Islam and that is in a completely natural and healthy way.


• Healthy: Natural preservatives like salt, sunshine, honey, vinegar or oil are not harmful to health, but beneficial in many ways.


• Eco Friendly: These methods do not harm the environment.


• Prevention of wastage: food Preventing wastage by conservation is an important teaching of Islam.


Therefore, it is safe, beneficial and Sunnah for us to follow the natural methods taught by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and the Salaf Salihin by avoiding artificial and harmful chemical preservatives.
