**🍞 Accidental Sweetness: The Night Saccharin Changed Everything**



 About 1879. One night of winter. A group of researchers are engaged in busy studies at the Laboratory of the University of Johns Hopkins in the United States. Russian chemist Constantin Fahlberg was then working on some chemical compounds of coal tar. He returned home after a long study.


**Then, the magic happens:**  


Falberg is shocked to eat that day's dinner Get up! The taste of the common bread looked impossible sweet! At first he thought maybe cooking was wrong. But a little later he noticed that the problem was not in the bread, but he had something in his hand which is so sweet!


He returned to the lab and found the source of this sweet. Examining he confirmed that it was a new chemical substance that many times more sweet than sugar. The name he names is the chemical of this unknowingly Saccharin gave.


He named it **Saccharin** – Earth’s first artificial sweetener


Sacarin is basically an organic compound that is used as an alternative to sugar. It's about 200 to 700 times more sweet than sugar! But its special feature is - it has no calories, no nutritional value.



**Why did it revolutionize the world?**  

1. It is safe for patients with diabetes - because it does not increase glucose levels in the body.

2. It is very little quantityGives high levels of sweetness in use.

3. It is calorie, resulting in controlling weight.


**How is saccharin made**?


Sacarin is made from the coal tar. In modern technology it is prepared through various chemical sales, which are now artificially produced.


**Is saccharin harmful**?


In the 1970s research showed that, in high levels of saccharin feeding The rat bladder is cancer. As a result, it is thought to ban it in many countries. But later researchers prove that this effect occurs only in rats, not for humans.


Currently the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has declared Sacarin safe.
